T<\/span>his year, t<\/span>he<\/span> Vice President<\/span>, Kamala Harris,<\/span> and Second Gentleman<\/span>, Doug Emhoff,<\/span> put up<\/span> a<\/span> national <\/span>s<\/span>ukkah at Blair House<\/span>, the<\/span>ir<\/span> residence, for<\/span> Sukkot, <\/span>the Jewish festival of harvest<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In Judaism, a sukkah is a hut that is built for eight days every year over <\/span>S<\/span>ukkot to <\/span><\/span>commemorate the 40 years the Jewish people <\/span>wandered<\/span> in the desert on their way to Israel after escaping slavery in Egypt<\/span><\/span>. <\/span>To <\/span>remember <\/span>the journey through the <\/span>desert<\/span> to the Land of Israel, <\/span>Jewish people<\/span> build and decorate a temporary hut <\/span>outside<\/span> their homes <\/span>and eat meals in them<\/span> for the 8-day duration of the Sukkot holiday<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
