Originally published in 2015 in the American Association of Colleges and Universities’ (AAC&U’s) Liberal Education Magazine, this article presents nine best practices for engaging religious diversity on campus. These emerged from Interfaith America’s partnerships with hundreds of campuses. Meant to answer the question, “What does excellence look like when it comes to the engagement of religious diversity on a college or university campus?,” the nine practices named are:

  1. Establishing links to institutional identity and mission.
  2. Developing a campus-wide strategy.
  3. Creating a public identity.
  4. Respecting and accommodating diverse religious identities.
  5. Making interfaith cooperation an academic priority.
  6. Building competence and capacity among staff and faculty members.
  7. Encouraging student leadership.
  8. Engaging in campus-community partnerships.
  9. Assessing campus climates and interfaith initiatives.
