Vote is Sacred

Reverend Moya Harris

Director of Racial Justice, Sojourners

Rev. Moya Harris, an Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, is the Director of Racial Justice at Sojourners, a magazine and mobilizing non-profit that explores faith, politics, and culture. In her role, she focuses on voter protection and the intersection of faith, politics, and civic engagement.

Rev. Harris, a retired nurse with over 27 years of experience, has seamlessly integrated her two passions-ministry and academia. Her academic journey is a testament to her inquisitiveness. She holds a B.S.N. from Towson University and an M.Div. from Payne Theological Seminary, and she is currently advancing her Ph.D. studies in African American Preaching and Sacred Rhetoric at Christian Theological Seminary. Her research, which focuses on African rhetoric and Black prophetic preaching with a hip-hop influence, is a testament to her intellectual curiosity and dedication.

Celebrating over 25 years of marriage with her husband, John I. Harris, III, and as a mother to Sierra Battle, Rev. Harris embodies womanist theology’s joy, courage, creativity, and prophetic imagination. Drawing inspiration from scholars like Dr. Katie G. Cannon, Molefi Asante, Obery Hendricks, and Zora Neale Hurston, she unites theory and praxis, advocating for a faith that is inseparable from justice. A lover of scholarship, justice, hip-hop, and technology, her contemplative moments are often set to the music of A Tribe Called Quest or hip-hop lo-fi beats, with a fresh pour-over coffee within reach.
